Manifestation: How To Change Your Life In Just A Thought

I found myself in a downward spiral halfway through June. Although I was enrolled in an amazing, female empowerment centered program, and had moved to the city of my dreams, I felt so lost and dejected. Hearing from amazing women in the entertainment industry, I couldn’t help but feel that I was never going to ‘make it’.

I spent 2 weeks in June cooped up in my apartment, declining invitations to go out, and calling my family at home way more than usual. I was convinced I would never get a job in LA because I wasn’t American and the visa situation is frankly soul-sapping.

Regardless, even if I did manage to obtain work authorization I would probably be getting coffee and copies for hot shots for the next 5 years.

Wallowing in the bottomless pit of pity(? wow I did not plan that) I felt like there wasn’t much point in continuing with my dream scheme of making it in Hollywood. Then, one day during the program I was doing, an actress/producer/director shared her story with us and she spoke at length about the Law of Attraction and manifestation.

Now, I know what you’re thinking. You’re either starry-eyed and willing to believe the best, or you’re a cynic who thinks manifestation belongs with the likes of astrology and tarot card readings: in the bin. I definitely lean more towards starry-eyed, but hear me out.

In 391 BC, Plato said ‘likes tend towards likes’. This is essentially the core of manifestation: when you think positively, you manifest more positivity. Again, I know some of you probably think this is bs. But, there is evidence rooted in science, too. Visualization, which like manifestation is a technique in which you literally visualize the future you want to live in, has been proven to have tangible outcomes.

Where anxiety is rooted in the negative anticipation for future events, visualization works in the opposite way. When we visualize a situation (e.g. ya girl winning an Oscar in 10-15 years) and really hone in on the details (my tear-jerking, winning speech), our minds register this as a memory, which means we feel more confident striving towards doing that as our mind believes we have already done it.

Another key construct of manifestation is the use of positive affirmations. When I started reading into manifestation, I found advice telling me to tell myself things that I wanted to be true and frame it in the present. So, say you wanted to be more organized with your time, you would tell yourself ‘I am great at time management’. I started telling myself these things a little over a week ago when I was feeling super down and it really worked for me.

I was no longer a ‘failure’, or a ‘waste of space’ but instead I told myself I was ‘living my dream’ and a ‘director’ (and more stuff that’s too embarrassing to write out here but when I manifest it I’ll fill y’all in ;) ).

At any rate, what do you have to lose from being a little more positive? I’m not a ray of sunshine. I cry infinitely more than the average human and am quick to doubt myself. But it hasn’t gotten me very far at all. Sure, if you are in a life threatening situation odds are you can’t manifest your way out of that but for the day-to-day, what’s the harm in framing things more positively?

The least it would do is put you in a positive framework temporarily.

Give it a go and let me know what you think!
